Experts say it’s a course that doesn’t necessarily have to be taught by a traditional math teacher. The K-12 standards for personal finance education, as recommended by the Council for Economic Education, include topics such as earning income, budgeting, saving, investing, and managing credit and financial risk. In the process, they may also develop an interest in math because of its practical applications. Students begin to understand that “yes, I need to learn decimals, and I need to learn fractions, and I need to learn percentages because I have to manage my money and I have to take out a loan,” Tatum-Gormes says.Īdvocates say personal finance courses could pay dividends if students learn how to make wiser money decisions and avoid financial hazards. She attributes better student engagement to them seeing the connection between math and their future financial well-being. At the same time, a general dislike for math remains an obstacle among young people.īut do topics like high interest rates translate to higher interest among students? Tonica Tatum-Gormes, who teaches the course, says yes. The surge comes as educators are scrambling to bolster students’ math skills, which plummeted during the pandemic and haven’t fully recovered. states have adopted laws or policies requiring personal finance education before students graduate from high school, bringing the total number to 30 states, according to the Council for Economic Education. The Washington, D.C., charter school may be a front-runner in providing financial education, but in recent years, many others have followed suit. Conversations about credit, investments, and loans, for instance, intersect with lessons on compound interest, matrices, and exponential equations. The elective math class has been a mainstay in Capital City Public Charter School’s offerings for more than a decade, giving students a foundation in money management while they hone math skills. “You have to be a millionaire to save up for that,” Martinez says with a chuckle.Ĭall it a reality check or an introduction to a critical life skill, this exercise occurred in a course called Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications. Martinez’s friend next to him writes a different long-term goal: Buy a private jet. Peering way into his future, the 18-year-old also imagines saving money to buy a house, start his own business, retire, and perhaps provide any children with a college fund. His medium-term financial goals take a little more thought, but he settles on a car - he doesn’t have one yet - and vacations. WASHINGTON - Inside a high school classroom, Bryan Martinez jots down several purchases that would require a short-term savings plan: shoes, phone, headphones, clothes, and food. Students begin to understand that “yes, I need to learn decimals, and I need to learn fractions, and I need to learn percentages because I have to manage my money and I have to take out a loan,” Tatum-Gormes says. The pull was backed by a flat brass plate and attached to the furniture with nails or crude bolts and nuts. Early 18th century - In the early 1700s, drawer pulls took on the bail shape that is still common today, hanging from two pins that curved inward to complete the handle. There may be ridges and bumps on the surface. The back of the plate is not uniform in texture, since it was sand cast. Late 17th century - During the late 17th century, known as the William and Mary period, drawer pulls were often "drop" pulls with a single knob that hung from a flat brass plate.Look at the texture of the pull, the material it's made of, and the style. These can help with dating antique furniture handles. According to Antique Trader, drawer pull construction went through many distinct phases over the years. The style and construction of antique drawer pulls offer clues about the date the hardware was made. The steel construction quickly allowed nails to be drawn instead of stamped by a machine, and around 1890, this became standard practice. 1885 and later - In 1885, nails began to be made of steel instead of wrought iron.Until 1885, nails were constructed from wrought iron. The top two edges of the nail are slightly rounded from the die going through, and the bottom two edges have little ridges or burrs. 1790 to 1890 - During this period, machines stamped nails from sheets of iron using dies like cookie cutters.Hand-forged nails usually date a piece of antique furniture to before 1790. Before 1790 - Nails were made by hand before 1790, which means a blacksmith turned the nail and then added a "rose head" by flattening the top with a hammer.According to the Journal of Antiques, nail styles and construction changed dramatically throughout the years. Are they uniform in size? Are they round or square? You can use the characteristics of the nail to date your hardware and antique furniture. If your piece has nails used in it, look carefully at the individual nails. Nail construction also changed dramatically over the years.
If a tiger was to attack a boa’s eggs or young, the boa would fight back in order to protect them. Another reason that boas may hunt tigers is to protect their young. Boas are also known to kill and eat other large predators, such as lions, leopards, and jaguars. Tigers are large animals and can provide a lot of meat for a snake to eat. One reason that boas may hunt tigers is for food. This tactic works well when hunting tigers because they are such large and powerful animals. Boas are ambush predators, meaning they will lie in wait for their prey to come to them before attacking. They are one of the few animals that will actively hunt and kill a tiger. The boa constrictor is a large snake that is found in the tropical regions of South America, Central America, and Africa. Finally, tigers are a relatively easy target for alligators since they tend to live and swim in open areas where alligators can easily sneak upon them. Secondly, alligators are powerful predators that can take down prey much larger than themselves. Firstly, alligators are opportunistic hunters and will take advantage of an easy meal. They have been known to prey on tigers, and they do so for a few reasons. You're stuck with one default alarm sound, but it's adjustable to five volume levels, so we felt that light and heavy sleepers alike could find a suitable setting. The ability to set three independent alarms (with a weekday-only option) is one "advanced" feature we found quite helpful. It may take some initial study of the instructions to figure out how the buttons work, as well as some fumbling to reach them when you want to snooze or turn off the alarm. The simplicity of the design translates to its functionality, with three small buttons in the back of the unit. For an affordable price, we appreciate its sleek wood styling and unique triangular shape one editor even uses it as the clock for her living room. If all you need is a basic, cost-effective alarm clock, the Jall Wooden Digital Alarm Clock gets the job done while looking nice doing it. The Lenovo Smart Clock Essential not only dependably replaced the parents' phone alarms for the task, but it also made their nights a bit more manageable with its ability to set the next alarm through voice commands and play soothing white noise for the baby.ĭimensions: 3.27 x 4.76 x 2.52 inches | Weight: 0.52 pounds | Alarm Type: Sound | Dimmable Display: Yes | Power Source: USB power cord | Battery Backup: No The family testing the device had a newborn child who needed to feed every three hours throughout the night. Our at-home tests put the device in a situation where reliable wake-ups were critical. Given the feature set, its list price is fairly reasonable, but you can occasionally find it on sale. It essentially functions like a smart speaker that can play streaming music and answer your questions-while providing a large, auto-adjusting LED clock display and dimmable night light. The default alarm sound is subtle but effective, and you can easily change it to just about anything, from your favorite songs to bird chirps. The voice commands help the clock earn 5 out of 5 stars for its ease of setup, and we gave it top marks in audio quality and performance as well. (It isn't compatible with other platforms like Amazon's Alexa, but a separate version with built-in Alexa is available as an alternative.) After a relatively simple setup process of connecting the device to your home's Wi-Fi network, it integrates seamlessly with the Google Home smart home platform and takes voice commands through Google Assistant. Relatively basic design with small buttonsĪlarm clocks don't always need a lot of advanced features to do their jobs, but we found that the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential's "smart" functions are convenient and reliable enough to earn our top overall spot. So, grab your cup of coffee, and let’s dive right into our insights on the best alarm clocks for sleepers of all types. We tested firsthand all of the sleep-friendly features of various alarm clocks, bringing them to our bedsides and evaluating sounds, lights, looks, and general usability across two-week periods of daily use. Shelby Harris, who is board-certified in behavioral sleep medicine and director of sleep health at Sleepopolis, and although she points to the benefits of waking up naturally as the ideal option, she also attests to the value of sunrise alarms, dimmable displays, and soothing sounds, while warning against overly bright displays and loud, traditional alarms.ĭr.

I also wish it had Timed Backups feature like in Notepad++.Īssuming you've downloaded and installed NetBeans, here's how to get it to work with XDEBUG: Step 1 - Configure PHP to work with XDEBUG What was it missing? Like many of the cross-platform IDE's, it's a Java application which means it is slower than it could be on Windows. It includes almost all of the features I regularly use and plugins to fill in the gap. There are tons of stories on the Net from developers switching from Eclipse to NetBeans but very few going in the other direction. PHPDesigner is even a native Windows app which is why I might still consider it. Some of the try before you buy contenders included PhpStorm 7.13 and PHPDesigner 8.1.2. My problem was part technology and part learning what I wanted to do in NetBeans which was to initiate the debugging session from within my web browser without having to modify the URL.Īlthough both of these are free, I would not have minded paying for an IDE for PHP development since I do a fair amount of this for a living. It did take me a little to figure out the XDEBUG integration but I got it to work exactly as I expected. NetBeans 8 - Way better user interface than Eclipse in my opinion. I'm not sure if it is even being developed anymore. PDT isn't even listed in their main list of downloads. Although I didn't try Eclipse (PDT), I did try Aptana which is built on Eclipse but I don't want to have to struggle to figure out the user interface… I want to code! Way too much work to try and find information. While I'm sure it's a fine product, the website is ancient and not user friendly. Eclipse (PDT) 3.5 - Didn't bother trying it.There are many great IDE's out there and everyone will have their favourite. I compared features of 9 different IDE's for PHP development and reading tons of reviews. After spending way more time that I should like to admit trying to get XDEBUG to work with Notepad++ using the DBGp plugin in anything but the simplest of projects, I decided to look for an alternative. This does not mean the medial and lateral heads are not engaged, but they are not involved to the same degree as the tricep long head is. When performing the cable pullover, you're moving your arms at the shoulder joint, which is an action performed mainly by the long head. All three tricep heads move the arm, but separately, they put finer details in the movements. The medial head helps the forearm extend, the lateral help head helps in arm extension movements that require high-intensity forces, and the long head allows during the extension and adduction of the arm at the shoulder joint. The tricep might function as one intrinsic system, but it is in reality made up of three different parts, namely the medial, lateral, and long heads.Īll three heads work as a group, but they also perform independent functions. The tricep or triceps brachii is the muscle that makes up the flesh part on the back of your upper arm. The cable pullover also works the triceps of your arm, specifically the long head. This not only provides a broader back that will improve your physique but also enhance your performance in functional and sports activities. Using the lats to pull the cables helps you isolate and activate them to increase their strength and muscle mass. In simpler terms, the lat muscle is essential for the proper functioning of the body. Other than this, the lat works as a stabilizer for the torso and a necessary respiratory muscle. It allows the scapular rotation to rotate, adduct, or extend the arm. The lats help motion take place in the shoulder joint. The widest of all muscles in the human body, the latissimus dorsi, works together with other connecting muscles to control the scapular movement of the shoulder blade. It is a thin, superficial muscle covering most of the other back muscles except the traps. The latissimus dorsi muscle is a broad, flat muscle that spans the entire length of the middle and lower back. In a nutshell, the cable pullover is an upper-body strengthening exercise. However, since no exercise is a hundred percent isolated, other muscles like the triceps, pectorals, teres major, rhomboids, and deltoid all contribute to your arm movement during the exercise. The primary muscle worked during the cable pullover is the lats of the back. Regardless of the variation, the method is the same: the movements only occur in the shoulder joint. While there are other variations of the cable pullover, this is the way to perform the conventional cable pullover. When performing the cable pullover, you face the cable machine, grab the overhead pulley, and pull the cable towards your thighs with your lats. The steel machine offers machine-assisted support when you perform the exercise, taking away the need for a constant awareness of your form, which would be the case in free weight pullover variations. Although it targets the back, a cable pullover uses the action of shoulder extension to move the shoulders to reach the target muscle.Ī cable pullover is a simple exercise performed using a cable machine, a steel structure containing weights attached to retractable cables. If better upper body muscle definition and more significant muscle mass happen to be on your wishlist, then you may want to consider adding this to your weekly training schedule.Įverything You Need To Know About Cable PulloversĪ cable pullover is an isolation exercise that primarily targets the latissimus dorsi muscle, also known as the lats, of the back. It is an isolation exercise designed to activate the major muscle groups in your upper body. From the cable bicep curl to the standing cable row, you can never run out of the possible exercises you can do with a can't machine.Ī cable pullover is one of the numerous practical exercises that can be performed using a cable machine. One thing is for sure: the cable machine offers a plethora of exercises.
